Helen K. Marutiak

Helen Katherine Marutiak was educated to be an accountant. She applied those skills, not to advance a career, but to raise a large family, to serve the community and the country.

When her seventh child, Teresa Marie, was born with Down's Syndrome, Helen devoted herself to establishing services for the developmentally disabled in Shiawassee county and Michigan. She offered to teach but came to realize that she was needed in a different capacity. As early as the 1960's, Helen took responsibility for the then-groundbreaking job of tracking down every family in Shiawassee County with a child with special needs. She used the information to convince the county to establish day program services. She was one of the first members of the ARC in Shiawassee County (then known as the "Association for Retarded Citizens") and for many years served as its treasurer. Helen was appointed to the Shiawassee County Community Mental Health Board of Directors and served there for thirty years, often as its treasurer. She worked with many other community organizations over the years, always bringing her organizational skills, steady leadership and devotion to the developmentally disabled.

Helen Stengle was born November 2, 1924 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. She graduated from Duquesne University in January of 1950, with a bachelor of science in business administration. A few months later, she married Peter J. Marutiak. They moved to Michigan where Peter graduated from law school. Helen and Peter settled in Owosso in 1952 and very quickly established themselves. Peter was appointed Municipal Judge in 1955, District Court Judge in 1969 and Shiawassee County Circuit Court Judge in 1974. Helen was beside him until his death in 1985.

Besides Teresa Marie, Helen had six sons, Peter in Albuquerque, Michael (Gerda) in Lansing, David (Carolyn) in London England, Joseph (Mieken) in Lansing, Mark in Clarkston and Patrick (Laura) in Perry. Her sons will serve as pall bearers.

Helen was a decorated veteran of the U.S. Army Air Force and served from 1944-46. She was honored as the 1986 ARC volunteer of the year for a 6 state region. She was appointed to the Shiawassee county jury board in 1993 and served for many years selecting jurors. In 1996 Helen was recognized by special tribute by the Michigan legislature for her dedication to the Community Mental Health system.

After her boys moved out she began working outside the home. She worked in accounting at Doll-Flynn and as a realtor where she sold a lot. She was an avid reader and loved water aerobics. She lived with Teresa Marie. Helen and Teresa Marie cared for each other and Teresa Marie was with her when she died peacefully at home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 am, Saturday, March 6, 2010 at St. Paul's Catholic Church, with Fr. John Fain officiating. Burial will follow at St. Paul Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Nelson-House Funeral Home on Friday from 2 to 8 pm, with the family present from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm.

Usually flowers are discouraged but her family says "hell yes, send flowers, she would have wanted that". Donations in Helen's name are suggested to the ARC of Shiawassee County, 1905 W M 21 Owosso.

After graduating from Owosso High School, she worked at Memorial Hospital as one of the first nurse aides. This is where she met her husband-to-be, Gene. He had been critically injured, and she nursed him back to health. Gene always said he fell twice - once from the Consumer's pole and once for Pauline.

Pauline was always busy in the church, cooking for large groups of people. She and Gene also worked with teenagers for several years. Later, they sponsored the Leisure Timers for several seasons. Pauline was a wonderful cook, as all of her family can attest to. She was truly a loving mother, grandmother and aunt.

Surviving are her children, Leslie Hugh (Linda) Tipton and Joanne Elaine Tipton; grandchildren, Leslie (Lisa) Tipton, Laura Tipton and fiance, Len Birchmeier, and Leanne (Craig) Culinski; great-grandchildren, Collin and Alyssa Tipton, Lindsay Clark and Luke Soupal, and Talia and Taylor Culinski; sisters-in-law, Blanche Allen and Edith Allen; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Gene; sister, Myrtle Perry; and two brothers, Robert and Donald Allen.

Pauline loved to cook, to sing and to buy gifts for everyone. She was an inspiration to her family and to all her knew her.
