Gene J. Sundquist
Age 81, of Tawas City, passed away Tuesday, June 30, 2009 at Covenant HealthCare in Saginaw. Gene worked as a plant manager for several dairy companies throughout Michigan and the Midwest. Funeral Services will be held 11 am, Thursday, July 2, 2009 at Nelson-House Funeral Home, with Pastor Cal Long officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside West Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 10 am until the time of the service. Gene was born on October 27, 1927 in Owosso, the son of Carl and Kathryn (McCarty) Sundquist. He enlisted in the Merchant Marines after graduating from Owosso High School and was later drafted into the United States Army during World War II, serving in Italy. He enjoyed boating and was an avid pilot, flying his airplane every chance he could. He loved traveling, taking in the scenery on long drives. He is survived by his sister, Marion Sundquist Simpkins; several nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wives, Alice Ann Watson, and Betty Williams; his parents; sister, Kathryn Smith; and two brothers, Thomas and John Sundquist. Age 53, of Corunna, passed away peacefully and unexpectedly Saturday, June 20, 2009 at his residence. Terry worked as a master mechanic for Consumers Energy for over thirty years. Funeral Services will be held at 11 am, Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at Nelson-House Funeral Home, with Rev. Susan Kingsley officiating. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. Terry was born on June 16, 1956 in Owosso, the son of William Martin and Vivian (Clark) Breining. He graduated from Owosso High School with the class of 1974 and went on to attend Ferris State University, where he received his Associate's Degree in Automotive Technology. On May 3, 1980 he married Debra Marie Kreinbrink in Owosso. He was
Past President of the Consumers Energy Union and an active member of
the Shiawassee County Conservation Club. He enjoyed being outdoors,
hunting, fishing, ice fishing, and going up north to Long Lake in Honor,
Michigan. He loved his family, and was known as a "happy-go-lucky"
guy. He is survived by his wife, Debra; two sons, Kegan and Kyle; mother, Vivian Breining; brothers, Jeff (Sheila) Breining, and Allan (Deborah) Breining; father and mother-in-law, Virgil and Ruth Kreinbrink; sisters-in-law, Kathy (Dave) Bond, and Dee Dee (Kevin) Miller; several nieces, nephews, and other loving family members. Age 79, of Owosso, passed away Sunday, June 21, 2009 at Covenant Healthcare in Saginaw. Jim retired from the Mitchell Corporation after thirty-six year, where
he worked as Manager of Production Control. Jim was born on February 8, 1930 in Owosso, the son of Arthur and Helen (Corrin) Stewart. He graduated from Chesaning High School with the class of 1948. He went on to attend Michigan State University where he played baseball until he was drafted. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict in Germany. On June 1, 1957 he married Mary Lou Foster at St. Paul's Catholic Church
in Owosso. She predeceased him on August 14, 2002. He was a member of
St. Joseph Catholic Church. He enjoyed local politics, and served as
the Owosso Township Supervisor, and 911 Commissioner for Shiawassee
County. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who loved spending
time with his family. He especially enjoyed watching his sons and grandsons
play sports. He was predeceased by his wife, Mary Lou; and brother and sister-in-law,

Age 64, of Owosso, passed away Thursday, June 18, 2009 at his residence. Daniel owned a Harley Davidson store first in Owosso and then St. Charles. Also, with his wife, Daniel owned and operated a Standardbred horse farm, all so he could give the very best to his family. A Celebration of Life will be held 6 pm, Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at Nelson-House Funeral Home. Daniel was born on February 8, 1945 in Pontiac, the son of John and Mary Lillian (Beckwith) DiPonio. On June 26, 1970 he married Alberta Louise Owen in Owosso. His passion
was riding his Harley and he enjoyed being a member of the Avengers
Motorcycle Club. He raised Standardbred horses and loved his family,
especially his grandchildren who were the joy of his life. He is survived by his wife, Alberta; sons, Paul (Diane) DiPonio, and Craig (Nancy) Pocs; daughters, Michelle (Randy) Batten, Melissa (Eryck) Stahr, and Dr. Sarah DiPonio; grandchildren, Jacob, Brandon, Aidyn, and Christopher; brother, Michael DiPonio; nieces, Maria (Patrick) Hillary, and Gina DiPonio. Age 88, of Owosso, passed away Wednesday, June 17, 2009 at Memorial Healthcare. Joyce was a homemaker who loved and enjoyed her family. The family will receive friends at Nelson-House Funeral Home on Sunday from 6 to 8 pm. Joyce was born on December 8, 1920 in Owosso, the daughter of Colonel Newton and Lena Estelle (McLucas) Creer. She graduated from Owosso High School in 1939. After graduating she worked at the Center Theater as an usher. She married Dean Evan English at the Methodist Church in Lansing on October 19, 1940. He predeceased her in 1991 after fifty-one years of marriage. She belonged to the Thursday afternoon Sunshine Bowling League, the League of Women Voters, Town & Country Child Study Club, and Wednesday Night Card Club. She is survived by her two granddaughters, Lori and Joy (JJ); three great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews, Edward K. Creer, Susan O'Bryn, both of California, Barbara Allen of Corunna, Sally St. Charles of Owosso, Rebecca Somsel of Brethren, Jean Young of East Lansing, John Richard of Holt, and Jere Creer of Midland; and numerous caring grand-nieces and nephews. Ruth was a homemaker and loved taking care of her family. After her family was grown, she took care of other people in their homes. She went on to attend the Nursing Program at Lansing Community College. Ruth was an avid MSU and NASCAR fan. She enjoyed listening to music, especially Jazz, and going to plays. He served in the United States Navy for four years during Vietnam. On July 5, 1980 he married Glenda Sue VanLoon in Vernon. He was a lifetime member of the Corunna VFW, Post 4005. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing Bingo and took great pride in dressing up and playing the part of Santa Clause for his grandchildren and other various children's groups. Survivors include his wife, Glenda; children, Della (David) Steege, Edward (Angela) Ade, Harry Ade, Tracy (Mary) Ade, Angela Wandrie, and Christopher (Dora) Hofacker; fifteen grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brother, Harry (Yvonne) Ade, Jr.; sister, Alice (Stan) Beach; several nieces, nephews, and other loving family members; and best buddy, Tobey. On May 24, 1975 he married Sharon Rose Reedy at St. Joseph Catholic Church. She predeceased him on February 14, 2009. He served on the board for Owosso Youth Baseball and was President for Jr. and Sr. Pony League and also coached for several years through the Owosso Little League. He enjoyed being with his family, grandchildren, and friends. He loved baseball, gardening, deer hunting and fishing. Age 87, of Owosso, passed away Saturday, June 6, 2009 at Memorial Healthcare. Nan was a homemaker who was also a devoted wife to the Rev. Dr. Halley B. Oliver who pastored the First Congregational Church U.C.C. for over thirty years. She was a graduate of Muskegon High School and went on to further her education with two years at Muskegon Junior College and graduated from Harper Hospital School of Nursing in Detroit. On December 27, 1945 she married Halley Brooks Oliver in Muskegon. He predeceased her in August of 1995. She was a member of the First Congregational Church U.C.C., the Current Topic Club, Shiawassee Arts Council, ARC, and was active with various church groups. Age 77, of Owosso, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Thursday, June 4, 2009 at Memorial Healthcare. Pearl was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother who devoted her time and love to raising her family. In her earlier years, she worked as a ticket agent for Indian Trails Bus, where she made life-long friends. Pearl was born on September 15, 1931 in Marshfield, Wisconsin, the daughter of John and Lillian (Priebe) Schmock. She attended the First Church of Christ in Owosso. On November 16, 1963 she married William P. Havalda in Owosso. She enjoyed watching game shows and old western movies, doing crossword and fill-in puzzles, and playing card and board games. She loved traveling, taking trips with the Prime Timers from First Church of Christ, visiting her daughter and son-in-law in California, and in 2005 she even learned to do the Hula while vacationing in Hawaii. She loved her precious cat and companion, Dolly, who was very dear to her heart. Spending time with her family was always very special to her. She is survived by her two daughters, Connie (Jerry) Ray of Owosso, and Linda (Jeffrey) Jensen of California; two grandchildren, Courtney and Lindsey Ray; and sister, Jean Caryl of Texas; brother-in-law, Tony Havalda; sister-in-law, Marion Korienek; several nieces and nephews; and many other loving family members. Age 85, of Owosso, passed away Monday, June 1, 2009 at the Shiawassee County Medical Care Facility in Corunna. Virginia was the secretary for Emerson School for 22 years and was transferred as a secretary to the Administrative Building for 3 years, retiring in 1990. A Celebration of Life will be held from 5 to 7 pm on Tuesday, June 9, 2009, at Nelson-House Funeral Home. Virginia was born on June 11, 1923 in Thompsonville, Michigan. She graduated from Thompsonville High School. She received a Piano Diploma from Bible Holiness Seminary in Owosso in 1941. On October 6, 1944 she married Robert O. Deer in Palmyra, Missouri. She was baptized at Owosso Church of Christ. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting and collecting all kinds of dolls and Beanie Babies. She loved her cats and was a good friend and neighbor. Survivors include her husband Robert; son, Robert (Cathy) Deer; granddaughter, Brie; special friend, Norma Raffaelli; several nieces, nephews and loving family members. She was predeceased by daughter, Ann Marie Siegrist and her daughter, Jamie; three sisters; and one brother. Age 70, of Owosso, passed away Saturday, May 30, 2009 at her residence. Janet was a homemaker who owned and operated her own beauty shop and art gallery. Janet was born on November 9, 1938 in Durand, the daughter of Leslie and Mary (Rolixman) Ackley. She graduated from Owosso High School with the class of 1956. She attended Cosmetology School in Flint. On April 26, 1957 she married Harold C. Mau in Vernon. She was an avid reader and bird watcher. She enjoyed working crossword puzzles, gardening and collecting hummingbirds. Survivors include her husband, Harold; two daughters, Cinthia Mau of Owosso, and Susan (Rudy) Batora of Henderson; son, Curtis (Patricia) Mau of Owosso; four grandchildren, Nicholas and Jared Batora, and Leslie and Mitchell Mau; sister, Gale VanLoon of Vernon; brother, Carl Ackley of Vernon; and many nieces and nephews. Alan was an orthodontist in Owosso for thirty years. He was Assistant Professor of Oral Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh from 1963 to 1967. A Celebration of Life will be held at 2 pm on Sunday, July 12, 2009 at the family farm, with Rev. James Eaton officiating. Alan was born on August 15, 1937 in Hicksville, Ohio, the son of Robert and Marian (Sprow) Welty. He attended the University of Michigan where he received his DDS and his MS in Oral Diagnosis. He finished his schooling at Temple University to become an orthodontist. On March 26, 1960 he married Joy Bindbeutel in Defiance, Ohio. He was a member of the Corunna School Board of Education for eight years, and a founding member of the Corunna Public School Education Foundation. He was a member of the Junior Livestock Board at the Shiawassee County Fair, Friends of Shiawassee River Board of Directors, and the Eastman Orthodontic Study Club. He had a love of the outdoors, and considered himself a steward of the land. Survivors include his wife, Joy; sons, Kurt (Diane) Welty, Kris (Daylene) Welty, and Kyle Welty; daughter, Beth (Jim) Dreyfuss; grandchildren, Kam, Drew, Kwyn, Emma, Lona, and Adam; brother, Philip (Marvel) Welty; sisters, Sheila (Eilert) Bruns, and Carol Lynn; sister-in-law, Lona (Bob) Blonquist; nieces and nephews, Tammy, Mike, Lynn, Tyler, Tonja, Sherry, Lori, Rob and Ryan. Age 83, of Owosso, formerly of Durand, passed away Wednesday, May 27, 2009 at Ovid Healthcare. Silas worked for the United States Government as a postal carrier. He owned and operated the Tap Room and Coat of Arms in Durand. He was also a Durand fireman for thirty years. Silas was born on October 2, 1925 in Durand, the son of Delbert Joseph and Mary (Proper) Stiff. He graduated from Durand High School and went on to serve in the United States Marine Corps. during World War II. On December 7, 1946 he married Margurite Mary "Marge" Spicer in Durand. He was a member of the V.F.W. and the American Legion. He enjoyed hunting, camping, fishing and spending time with his friends and family. Survivors include his wife, Marge; two daughters, Debra (Greg) Kanan, and Linda Moiles, both of Owosso; brother, J.D. (Patsy) Stiff of Florida; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and good friend, Jo Merkel. He was predeceased by his parents; two sisters; and a brother. Age 48, of Owosso, passed away Monday, May 25, 2009 at her home after a courageous battle with cancer. Laura was born on July 17, 1960 in Shawnee, Oklahoma to Dwight and Carol (Helean) Epperson. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 am, Thursday, May 28, 2009 at St. Paul's Catholic Church, with Fr. John Fain officiating. Burial will follow at St. Paul Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Nelson-House Funeral Home on Tuesday from 6 to 8 pm, and on Wednesday from 2 to 8 pm, with the family present from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm. A Rosary will be prayed at 7 pm. She graduated from Shawnee High School in 1978. She attended Southwestern Oklahoma State University and received her Bachelor of Science degree in accounting in 1982. Laura had been a city clerk, an accountant, and a cashier during her working career, and always gave of her time as a volunteer for community service. She volunteered for the Chamber of Commerce, the United Way, and Betty Mamhoudi's One World for Children. With a friend, Cindy Shuster, she started a local Epilepsy Support Group and raised funds for the Michigan Epilepsy Foundation. As a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church, she was also active in Bible Study, Church Choir and the Altar Society. She spread the devotion to Mary with the rosaries she made throughout the years and was instrumental in forming a "pray it forward" group. Her mother had taught her to make rosaries as a child. On November 19, 1988 Laura married Joe Rolando at the St. Andrews Church

Age 81, of Owosso, passed away Saturday, May 23, 2009 at Memorial Healthcare. Robert retired from General Motors, Buick where he worked as a setup man for thirty years. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He enjoyed doing auto body work on cars and farm equipment. He was well-known for being a hard worker and very dedicated to his church and his family. Survivors include three sons, Ronald Lee (Sherry) Bartlett, Robert Lewis (Deborah) Bartlett, and Steven James (Michelle) Bartlett; six grandchildren, Randy, Jennifer, Ryan, Matt, Connor, and Caden; brother, Harold Bartlett; many nieces and nephews and other loving family members. He had an enjoyment for life and leaves behind many loving family members
and friends. He loved traveling up north, especially to Frankfort, Michigan.
Hunting, fishing, and watching Michigan football and basketball were

On October 2, 1943 he married Mary A. Tejkl in Owosso. He loved being outdoors hunting, fishing, snowmobiling and boating. He enjoyed collecting coins, trains and airplanes. He was a member of the Local 754, the Shiawassee Democratic Party, and the Middlebury United Methodist Church. Russ was very active in many different organizations within the community. His passion was with the Shiawassee County Fair where he loved volunteering to drive people from place to place throughout the fair grounds in his golf cart. Survivors include his daughters, Judy Butterfield, and Janet (Ray) Vanhecke; four grandchildren, Liz Sidebotham, Katie (Chris) Bergstrom, Michael Butterfield, and Megan Butterfield; three great-grandchildren, Riley, Wyatt and Jack; and several nieces and nephews. but his passion was for the family dairy farm which he and his son ran. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 2 to 8 pm. R.G. was born on June 5, 1918 in Ovid, the son of Emery and Gladys (Bane) Leland. He graduated from Ovid High School with the class of 1937. He was a member of the First Free Methodist Church. On December 8, 1940 he married Virginia Galloway in Napoleon, Ohio. He was an avid hunter of small game, including pheasants and deer. He enjoyed going to the family cabin at Higgins Lake, where he enjoyed boating and taking time to relax with his family. He loved traveling and had spent time in Florida, Texas, Arizona, and Mexico. He enjoyed playing Dominos, card games, and shuffle board. His family was very important to him, and he loved spending time with them. Survivors include his wife of sixty-eight years, Virginia; daughter, Alice (Eugene) Pokorny; son, Bert (Pat) Leland; daughter-in-law, Sue Leland; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
