Ruth Matzkanin attended Rush Center number 4 country school (one room brick with outhouse) northwest of Henderson as a child. Ruth graduated from Elsie High School in the class of 1942 which had 42 graduates. Ruth lived with the C. K. Richards family the first three years of high school and the Howard Allen family in her senior year and took care of the young children of both families. The attack on Pearl Harbor happened in Ruth's senior year. The Senior Class was called to the gym and listened to President Franklin Roosevelt address the nation on the day after Pearl Harbor was attacked on the radio. Ruth said everything changed for the class. They were no longer high school kids. Ruth desired to be a nurse. However, Ruth was enrolled in Owosso Business School by her Dad and learned Gregg shorthand and typing. Ruth became very proficient with the typewriter. After this Ruth worked for the State of Michigan Civil Service in Lansing doing stenciling to write job descriptions. Ruth then worked for Gamble Warehouse on South Shiawassee Street north of the Grand Trunk Railroad tracks. Following this Ruth worked for H. K. Allen Paper Company as a secretary. It was here that Alex and Ruth met. Alex was delivering mail as a temporary postal employee. Alex and Ruth were married June 4, 1947 at Burton Methodist Protestant church parsonage and traveled to Niagara Falls for their honeymoon. Ruth became a homemaker. Ruth went back to work taking a job as a cook at the then brand new Owosso High School in 1962 in the cafeteria where she worked for several years before going back to office work in the Veterans Affairs Office in Corunna for a number of years. In approximately 1957 Ruth's family started to attend Grace Bible Church. Alex and Ruth each received Jesus Christ as Personal Savior. Both Alex and Ruth considered this to be the most important decision of their lives. Ruth was very happy that Arthur, Martha, and Chester received Jesus Christ as Personal Savior because she knew someday the whole family would be together in heaven. Ruth was a Sunday School teacher for girls, coordinated a Sunday School Christmas program, and helped coordinate Senior activities with Pauline Tipton and Alice Dahlberg. Ruth was interested in missions and supported the Radio Bible Class, Billy Graham, and the American Bible Society. Alex and Ruth became members of the church soon after they were baptized. Ruth believed reading the Bible and prayer were important aspects of her Christian faith. Ruth's Christian faith gave Ruth peace in her heart to be kind and gentle, to not complain, and to have a strong unspoken resolve to do what was morally correct in all areas of her life. Lake City was where the family would spend part of the summer in the early 1960's at Alex and Ruth's cabin on Sapphire Lake when the kids were still in school. Ruth enjoyed "rockhounding" especially on the beaches of Lake Superior and in the abandoned iron and copper mine piles in the Upper Peninsula. Alex and Ruth were involved with the Shiawassee Valley Gem and Rock Club for a number of years. Ruth enjoyed her travels to England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland, a train trip from Toronto to Vancouver with an air flight back to Toronto plus many bus tours in the United States. Art and Ruth drove around Lake Superior, flew to New York City for a several days visit, drove to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and Sharpsburg, Maryland (Antietam Creek) to examine Civil War battlefields (Ruth's great grandfather Edwin Harris was present at Gettysburg and fought at Antietam Creek), and drove to Chicago for the Antiques Road Show at Navy Pier. Ruth took trips with Martha to destinations in Indiana and Michigan. Alex and Ruth also took many driving vacations. Ruth loved her dogs. Ruth's last dog was an eight pound white and black papillon named Maggie that loved to be around people. Ruth liked to groom Maggie, take Maggie for walks and rides, and help Maggie to get in her bed every night made up of rugs and towels located by Ruth's bed. Ruth enjoyed keeping house, cooking, gardening, reading, and playing her piano in earlier years and then the electronic keyboard. Ruth volunteered to help students improve their reading skills at Bryant School for a few years. Ruth also was a Cub Scout Den Mother. A special thank you to Debbie Selleck who gave Ruth sponge baths three times a week and assisted Ruth with her personal care between June 7 and January 4 which helped Mom to stay home through January 4 despite Ruth's Alzheimer's Disease and the volunteers at Hospice House of Shiawassee County who showed Ruth the love of Christ like Ruth was their own mother. Ruth had an unwavering trust in Art as he cared for her. Memorial donations are suggested to Grace Bible Church, Shiawassee Humane Society, or Hospice House of Shiawassee County. Ruth is survived by her son Arthur of Owosso and daughter Martha (Robert Byington) of Hastings, grandchildren Sarah (Stu Konynenbelt) of Kentwood, and Eric of Grand Rapids, and great grand child Owen. In 1946 he returned to Michigan and took a job teaching biology at Owosso High School, where he met and married fellow teacher Elizabeth Philp on Aug. 2, 1947. Together they had two sons, Doug and Gary. He tended his Owosso garden lovingly from 1949 until the last days of his life, following in the footsteps of his father. Bruce enjoyed extended tent camping trips to the Great Lakes of Michigan, for 23 consecutive years taking his sons to Eagle Harbor, Michigan on the shores of Lake Superior in the Keweenaw Peninsula where he delighted in baiting the underwing moths and collecting (and meticulously documenting) many specimens for his burgeoning butterfly and moth collection, which spanned the 1930's to the 1990's. In 1984 Bruce and Elizabeth spent the first of many happy winters in Vero Beach, Florida, which enabled him to connect with an active Audubon Society branch and continue with his well-recorded observations of birds and nature. He was able to spend a great deal of time there with his cherished granddaughters, Lauren and Jesse as they moved through their school years in Vero Beach, and he made many friends in Florida among fellow birders and amateur photographers. Recently, he donated both his Lepidoptera and bird study skin collection
to Michigan State University. For many years he wrote essays on birds
and nature which were published in the Owosso Argus Press and finally
these essays, with the help of Jesse and Lauren, were published in book
form, titled The Birds of Shiawassee County in 2010. In addition to
his love of nature, Bruce had a deep love for reading poetry and classic
literature, and his family always marveled at his ability to quote passages
or entire poems into his 90s. Bruce is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Elizabeth; his son Douglas Earl Wilson of Deer Isle, Maine; his son Gary Bruce Wilson of Tucson, Arizona and his wife Kathryn; his beloved sister Ruth Wilson of Okemos, and his three granddaughters, Lauren Wilson Rolfe of San Francisco and her husband Alex Rolfe, Jesse Wilson Shattuck and her husband Spencer Shattuck of Traverse City, and Sarah Wilson of Deer Isle, Maine. He combined his deep knowledge of natural history, and a love of sharing
this knowledge, with an endless quest to learn more. He will be remembered
always by numerous friends and students from his lengthy teaching career
for his passion for the world around him, his voracious reading and
studies, and, above all, for his kind and gentle nature and devotion
to his life's work and his family. Memorials may be directed to the Michigan Audubon Society or the Shiawassee
