Obituary for Evelyn Ruth King (nee Spires)

Evelyn Ruth King (nee Spires) left this mortal coil on 9-3-17 at the age of 98.

Beloved mother of Judi King of Frankenmuth, MI, Linda Ahlgren of Sears, MI, John King of Falls Church, VA, and Geoff King of Flagstaff, AZ; she was preceded in death by her loving husband, John L. King, Jr., in 1989, following more than 49 years of a marriage which began in Detroit on Christmas Day, 1939.

Evelyn was born on October 18, 1918 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, a daughter of the late George Raymond and Marguerite Julia (Clarke) Spires.

She leaves behind 5 grandchildren, Jodi (Greg) Drogowski, Chris (Kate) Ahlgren, John IV (Sarah), Stacey King, Stefanie (Ray)Medina, and 14 great-grandchildren, Jessica, Caleb, Rebekah, Jacob Drogowski, Melissa (Tyler) Etrich, Meaghan, Malachi, Myles Ahlgren, John V, Claire, Calvin King, Kameron Arnett, Adrianna, Julian Medina.

Active in the Lutheran Church, she spent most of her time as a gentle, loving mother and homemaker, and was often heard to say that "the only thing that really counts in this life is to help other people", which credo she embodied throughout her long life. She also volunteered her time at the Red Cross and as a librarian to nursing homes.

A memorial service will take place at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 2510 N. M-52, Owosso, on Saturday, September 16, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. George Zornow officiating. She will join her husband at Washtenong Memorial Park in Ann Arbor.
