Obituary for John Ballou

John Leroy (Roy) Ballou

On February 15, 2018, at the age of 95, Roy was called home by his Heavenly Father, after a brief illness of pneumonia. He is assuredly now reunited with his family. Roy was born in Owosso, Michigan, on June 20, 1922, where he remained a life-long resident. John (Roy) was the youngest child of William and Julia (Rourke) Ballou.

Roy entered military service in the US Army on October 14, 1942 during World War II. He enlisted “for the duration of the War or other emergency, plus six months” and was honorably discharged in January 1946. During his service, he was a truck driver in the South Pacific Theater and was stationed in the Philippines and New Guinea. He rarely spoke of his military service. He was a humble man and did not seek attention to himself.

Roy retired from Swanson Manufacturing but had other careers and businesses in his life time. He was the owner of a well drilling company and car salesman to name a few. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Owosso.

He faithfully served his family and felt a sincere duty to care for them, putting himself second to everyone else. He cared for all of his siblings and his parents during and at the end of their lives. He religiously visited family members confined to nursing homes. He was a Hero in the eyes of his family for his devotion to them.

Roy is best remembered for his ready smile, and infectious laughter. One of his favorite past-times was sitting in his yard listening to the radio and enjoying the day. He loved to exchange funny stories and jokes. He was a joy and full of laughter. He was a remarkable backyard mechanic where he loved to work on his many cars, small engines and electronics. He especially loved going to the movies, attending plays and going out to eat with his late cousin Janet (Don) Washburn.

John was predeceased by his parents William and Julia (Rourke) Ballou; siblings, George, Margaret, Edna, and Robert; close cousins Don & Janet (Walker) Washburn, Dorothy (Washburn) Kerscher, Clare Washburn.

He will be dearly missed by his surviving cousins: Joan (Washburn) & Paul Burke, Cindy (Washburn) Siddock, Donnie & Jackie (Isham) Washburn; Jeff Washburn; Cathy (Kerscher) & Bill Wilkinson.

The date and time of the Memorial service will be announced in the spring. Interment will be at St. Paul’s Cemetery, Owosso, MI.
