Obituary for Robert "Bob" Michael (Erno) Whipple

Robert “Bob” Michael (Erno) Whipple

Age 65, passed away Friday, September 29, 2017, at home surrounded by his family.

Mr. Whipple was born on November 7, 1951, in Owosso, MI, to Robert Charles and Leora Lucille (Huey) Erno. His father died in France while serving in the U.S. Army when Mr. Whipple was an infant. His mother later remarried and he was adopted by Duane Whipple. He grew up in Owosso and graduated from Owosso High School (Class of 1969). Upon graduating from Owosso High, he served as a corpsman in the U.S. Navy and was stationed at the Philadelphia Naval Hospital. He later went on to graduate from Michigan State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice.

After graduating from MSU, Mr. Whipple spent 18 years as a social worker for the State of Michigan, Children’s Protective Services. Working for and protecting Michigan’s most vulnerable gave him great purpose in his career. Most recently he was an instructor at Baker College, teaching Regulations and Procedures in the Truck Driving School.Mr. Whipple married Susan Swarthout on July 11, 1998 in Owosso, and had three grown children from a previous marraige.
An active sportsman, Mr. Whipple enjoyed playing fast-pitch softball in his younger days and golfing with his friends. Although, admittedly, he was no Phil Mickelson. He was a fervent Michigan State fan and enjoyed travelling to see Spartan teams compete. Mr. Whipple was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and participated in its golf and pool leagues.

He was a very loving and proud grandfather, and his grandchildren brought him great joy during the last few years of his life.

Mr. Whipple is survived by his wife, Susan (Swarthout); children, Charlie (Colleen) Whipple of Washington, D.C., Kristin Whipple of Lansing, MI, and Katie (Dominic) Kanan of Dewitt, MI; grandchildren, Scarlett, Charlie, Clara, DJ, Maci, and one grandson on the way. He is also survived by one brother Leroy (Laura) Whipple of Dundee, MI, and sister Patricia Whipple of Charlevoix, MI, along with many loving nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, and one brother, William “Bill” Whipple.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on 10am Tuesday, October 3, 2017, at St. Paul Catholic Church with Fr. Michael O’Brien officiating. Burial will immediately follow at St. Paul Catholic Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Nelson-House Funeral Home on Sunday, October 1, 2017 from 4pm-8pm and Monday, October 2, 2017 from 2pm-8pm with a rosary service at 7pm.

In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested either to the family or to the Movember Foundation.
