Obituary for Albert Lieberman

Albert Lieberman, known for his warmth, wit, love, and lasting impact on family, friends, and students, passed away peacefully at home Wednesday February 20, 2019. He was 90.

Albert was born in Wyandotte to Samuel and Celia (Cohen) Lieberman. Growing up in Owosso, Albert passed time fishing on the Shiawassee River, getting into regular mischief with his best friend Doc Elliott, as well as helping with his father’s potato chip business and later restaurants.

After graduating as class president from Owosso High School in 1946,   Albert attended Michigan State University.  Albert earned a Bachelor’s degree in Education and a Master’s degree in Counseling from Michigan State University while serving as an admired and charismatic team member on the varsity boxing team.

Following in his father’s footsteps,  Albert became a longtime restaurateur in both Michigan and Florida. Albert’s famous Celia’s coney dogs helped him win over Mickie, whom he married on Aug. 5, 1966. Though well remembered for his drive-ins and as the founder of Owosso’s Cone Zone,  Albert’s greatest legacy prevailsthrough the many students he impacted during his 37 ½ years coaching, teaching, and counseling for Owosso Public Schools.

Throughout his retirement,  Albert enjoyedfeeding the chipmunks at his summer home in Frankfort, Michigan, fishing off his dock in Naples, Florida, and making frequent visits to Owosso to spend time with his grandchildren, with whom he shared his most entertaining and mischievous stories and ideas.

Albert is survived by his son Jim Lieberman of Naples, Florida; daughter Samantha Lieberman (Jim) Stechschulte; grandchildren Alexa Stechschulte and Samuel Stechschulte of Owosso; niece Johanna Lieberman (Francesco) Ferrario and her children Luca and Livia of Los Angles; nephew Josh Lieberman of Los Angeles; step children Laura Tomich, Randy Gideon (Mary Deur), and Jeff (Janet) Gideon; step grandchildren Amanda (Quinton) Pilger and Maia (Kevin) Elmore.

He was predeceased in death by his wife Mickie (Quamme) Lieberman, parents, sister Ann Lieberman, and brother Marty Lieberman.

The family would like to thank Albert’s caregivers Amanda, Kim, Laura, and Susan.

Memorials are suggested to Shiawassee Arts Center, Hospice House of Shiawassee County, or Shiawassee Humane Society.
