Alvin F. Root

Age 98, a lifelong resident of the Owosso and Byron area, passed away Friday January 12, 2018 at The Meadows.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10am Tuesday January 16, 2018 at St. Paul Catholic Church with Father Dieudonne Ntakarumtimana officiating.  Burial will follow at Byron Cemetery.  The family will receive friends at Nelson-House Funeral Home on Monday January 15 from 4pm to 8pm with a rosary being prayed at 7pm.

Alvin was born in Detroit, Michigan on November 24, 1919, the son of Oliver and Leah (LaFave) Root.  He attended Byron Agricultural High School and graduated in 1939.  He proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1942-1945 as a Flight Surgeons Assistant with the rank of Sergeant.  He spent most of his service overseas in Guatemala and England.  Alvin attended Michigan State University (MSU), graduating in 1949 with a B.S. degree in Animal Husbandry.  He received a Masters Degree from MSU in Extension Education in 1960.  He was employed by MSU Extension Service as a 4-H Youth Agent.  Alvin spent 25 years working with the 4-H youth in Shiawassee County.  He received the National Distinguished Service Award in Washington DC in 1963 and was a lifelong member of the Michigan 4-H Association.

Alvin was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church of Owosso and a member of the Knights of Columbus, 1139 Council, Epsilon Sigma Pi fraternity and the National Fiddlers Association.  He loved music and played his violin at many jamborees, contests, birthdays and anniversaries.  Alvin was also fascinated by the history and culture of the American Indians, constructing an authentic tee-pee on his property, which he shared with community groups who desired a tour.  After retiring in 1976, he was engaged in real estate sales.

Alvin married Mildred Hoover on March 7, 1942 in Jackson, Mississippi.  They were married for 64 years when Mildred passed away in 2006.
