Obituary for William "Bill" Alvin Cook

Just before sunrise, on Sunday February 18, 2018, William Alvin Cook, Jr passed from our earthly world and into the Kingdom of God.

Bill was born on January 16, 1927 in New York City to Dr. William Alvin Cook and Estelle Canavan Cook, the oldest of three precocious children.

He graduated from Scarsdale High School in Scarsdale, NY and later Cornell University in Ithaca, NY with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.Bill proudly served the United States Navy during WW ll.

He moved his family from New York to Michigan in 1968 with a stop in Midland, Michigan where he worked for Dow Corning, Inc. but in 1973 Owosso, Michigan became HOME!Over the past 45 years, Bill Cook has been involved in numerous community projects.  He was one of the original charter members in 1973 of The Kiwanis Club of Shiawassee-Owosso, Michigan, which was affectionately referred to as “the Morning Club”.  Bill also especially enjoyed the Shiawassee Humane Society’s “Pets on The Street” campaign.  He was on the Owosso Planning Commission for a number of years and a member of The Owosso Knights of Columbus.

Bill was a devout Catholic and an active member at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Owosso where he was a Eucharistic minister for many years.

Above all else, Bill loved pets, people and life!  His pool was open to all during the summer months and he had a knack for making you feel right at home.  His quick wit, charm, infectious laugh and genuine love for life was evident in every conversation he had and the sparkle in his eyes was the only way you could tell if he was “pulling your leg”. If asked how he was doing, Bill’s response was always an emphatic, EXCELLENT!

He is survived by his wife of nearly 22 years, Rita Gail Cook, twins David (Jeanese) and Dana Cook, step children Ray (Susie) Hall and Debra Hargrave. His beloved grandchildren, Olivia, Emma and Ethan Hall, Matthew (Holly) Hagey, Nicholas (Kylie) and Samantha Hargrave and 5 great grandchildren along with special family friend, Michael Winchester, sister and brother in law, Sally and Leslie Kish and brother in law Robert S. Stimpson.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Carol Goulding Cook, his parents and siblings George Richard Cook and Catherine Patricia Stimpson.

Bill’s family will greet friends at Nelson House Funeral Home on Friday February 23rd from 2-4pm and 6-8 pm.  A mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday February 24th at 10am at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Owosso.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Bill’s honor can be made to St. Paul’s Church, Hospice House of Shiawassee County or CACS-Walk For Warmth.
