Obituary for Billie Ann Striggow

Surrounded by her loving family, Billie Ann (Bower) Striggow passed away July 19, 2018, after living for many years with Alzheimer’s disease.

A celebration of Billie’s life will be held at Nelson House Funeral Homes, Owosso Chapel on Saturday, August 4th at 4:00 p.m. with Reverend Ray Strawser officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 1:00 p.m. to the time of service.

Born May 23, 1933, to John and Aurelia (Elwell) Bower in Owosso, MI, she was a beautiful child with a beautiful smile; her father’s pride and joy.

Graduating in 1951 from Corunna High School, Billie went to work for Redmond’s and later Douglas Trucking. She joined Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, enjoying the friendship of her “sisters”.  June 27, 1953, she married the love of her life, William “Bill” Striggow, and a year later they welcomed a daughter, Johnnie Robin; three years later they welcomed a second daughter, Jonie Lee.

Billie Ann volunteered as a schoolroom mother. With the help of two friends they founded the first Corunna Elementary Schools Field Day, an event that is still held and enjoyed by students. Because she was passionate about children knowing how to swim, Billie actively collected signatures for a pool millage. The millage passed and to this day CHS continues to enjoy the Olmsted Pool, with untold numbers of kids (and adults) learning to swim.

Billie was a life-long member of the Corunna United Methodist Church. She was a past member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Extension Club and Garden Club. Billie also bowled for RV Sales. One of her greatest enjoyments, as well as that of her family and friends, was baking. Each day it was a cake, cookies or pie. She often commented that she would “bake all day, every day if there was someone to handle the clean up.” Billie’s pies were made with cherries or apples from her parents’ trees or rhubarb, blueberries or raspberries from her own garden. Her pies were delectable. And then there were her cookies... a welcome ‘home-from-school’ treat enjoyed not only by her daughters, but their friends as well.

Later Billie took Wilton cake-decorating classes and found another hobby she dearly enjoyed. Her daughters were the lucky recipients of this new skill, enjoying specially decorated birthday cakes. Billie made several cakes, which she entered in the county fair, taking home many blue ribbons.

After their daughters were on their own, Billie and Bill traveled throughout the United States, enjoying the many sights. A trip south landed them in Gulf Shores, Alabama, where they decided to spend their winter months. For years they rented a large beach house so there would be plenty of room for family and friends to visit. Everyone was welcome. Oh the memories that were made; swimming in the gulf, enjoying walks along the sand (Billie’s favorite), and most importantly, discussion over morning coffee about where to go for seafood dinner!

Billie Ann is survived by her husband Bill of 65 years, daughters, Johnnie Robin and Moe Bompezzi and Jonie Lee and Clifford Mitts, grandchildren Tiffany and Steve Lewkowski, Nick and Michelle Bompezzi, Andrea Mitts (Todd Witherell) and Jonathan Mitts as well as great-grandchildren Lanee and Cade Lewkowski and Giada and Alessia Bompezzi. Billie is also survived by her brother Jack and Joanne Bower; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Bob and Linnell Striggow and Jack and Carole Striggow, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Billie was predeceased by her parents John and Aurelia Bower, father-in-law and mother-in-law Leo and Dorothy (Graham) Striggow, dear cousin Carolyn Bigford-Scully, and niece Jill Striggow Batteen.

Thank you to special neighbors Frank and Karen Corrin, Respite volunteers, Memorial Healthcare Hospice, and the staff at Care N’ Assist - Pat’s Place and Wildwoods Assisted Living in Corunna.

As her final act of giving, Billie Ann proudly and selflessly donated her body to the MSU Willed Body Program.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Respite Volunteers of Shiawassee, or Memorial Healthcare Home Health & Hospice.
