Obituary for James W. Whalen

James "Jim" William Whalen

Age 85 of Owosso passed away Thursday, August 2, 2018 at Memorial Healthcare surrounded by his loving family. He will be greatly missed.

A Memorial Service will be held 7pm Saturday August 4, 2018 at Nelson-House Funeral Homes, Owosso Chapel with Pastor Timothy J. Whalen officiating. The family will receive friends on Saturday August 4th from 6pm until the time of service followed by military honors.

Jim was born February 1, 1933. He married his sweetheart, Lois Ashley on June 23, 1956. They have 3 sons: Pastor Timothy (Cathy) Whalen, Christopher (Karen) Whalen and Randall (Jeanette) Whalen.

Jim served his country during the Korean War as a member of the United States Navy. He served onboard the USS Rowan DD-782. His ship received artillery fire from North Korean forces and Jim was within feet of being killed but the Lord spared him. The Rowan earned four battle stars in Korea.

He was an outdoor enthusiast. Hunting and fishing were a favorite pastime. He is probably sitting on a river bank up in Heaven waiting for that next bite. Jim enjoyed time with his family.

He was an officer on the Owosso Police force in the early sixties before he went to General Motors to work Plant Protection. He retired from General Motors after many years of service.

Jim was a member of the VFW and the FOP.

He is survived by his wife, Lois, their 3 children and spouses; grandchildren Stephanie, Timothy, Jackson, Cameron, Serenity, Addy Mae, Daniel, Malani, Shelby, Rebecca, Kristy, Danielle and Nicholas; brothers and sisters Daniel (Delores), Harold (Barbara), Agnes (Bobby), Eugene, Ellen and Edward (Kathy); great-grandchildren James and Grant.; sister-in-law Inez Ross and many nieces and nephews.

Jim was predeceased by his parents, mother and father-in-law, brother William and wife Carolyn, sister Rosalie and husband Duane and great-grandchild Cayden.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Owosso V.F.W. Post.
