Obituary for Hope J. Purdy

Elizabeth Virginia Hope Purdy

Elizabeth Virginia Hope Purdy, at the age of 101 passed away December 22nd after emergency surgery for a fractured hip and a stay at Pleasant View for rehabilitation. While there she was making great strides but fell again. The set back was too much and she left us peacefully.

Hope was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on October 18, 1917 to Edward C. Johnston and Elizabeth Horton Johnston. Her brothers, Curtis, Donald, and Robert, predeceased her. She graduated from West High School in Minneapolis and attended the University of Minnesota. She worked at Montgomery Ward as a bookkeeper while aspiring to a career in fashion design. Her designs are a true family treasure.

She met her husband, Frederick C. Purdy, while vacationing on Mackinac Island. The summer carriage driver was smitten with the lovely young woman from Minnesota, and they married three months later. The couple settled in Detroit, where Hope volunteered with the Red Cross during WWII. Later they moved to Birmingham, MI where she volunteered as a Girl Scout leader and at the Community House furthering efforts to strengthen her community.

They came to Owosso in 1978 to begin Hope’s Hallmark Store. It became the preferred destination for cards and gifts. Many fondly remember it as a beautiful store. Hope and Fred retired and sold the business in 1993. They were married almost 55 years until his death January 8, 1998.

Hope was active in the Owosso Arts Council and in the altar guild at her beloved

Christ Episcopal Church. She loved to cook new recipes, and was known for her lemon meringue pies at the Fall dinners at her church.and participated in Bible study. She was an avid reader, and her daughters often said that she probably had read all of the books at the Owosso Public Library. She loved to debate world events and politics. Her favorite pastime was exploring the Internet, sending and receiving e-mail.

Hope is survived by three daughters, Linda Apostle of Orient, NY, Nancy Magner of Lapeer, MI, and Constance Greenbach of Owosso. Her pride and joy were her grandchildren, Peter Apostle, Jill Stevenson and Weston Greenbach. She was very proud to call herself Great Grandmother to Nathaniel and Noelle Stevenson, Roman and Vera Apostle.

Services, led by the Reverend Alice Lewis, will be held at Christ Episcopal Church in Owosso, MI on December 29th at 11:00 am.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in remembrance to Christ Episcopal Church 120 Goodhue Street, Owosso, MI.

Private family services will be held at the Caro Cemetery in Caro, MI where she will be buried next to Frederick.
